Across San José to Tres Rios

It was good to leave the touristy La Fortuna and head on towards more volcanoes but I also had San José in my way. It’s never fun crossing Central American capital cities on a loaded (or unloaded) bicycle and this was no exception. I couldn’t find a nice route around San Jose unfortunately since I wanted to head up Volcán Irazú and Turrialba on the famous Ruta de Las Conquistadores (a fantastic route across the whole of Costa Rica; next post) en route to the Caribbean. This post details my route from La Fortuna to Tres Rios.

On my way to Poas from Arenal, just before Agua Zarcas, a nice little cut through gets you off the main road for a short section..

The road up to Poas went on and on and into the clouds

Passing this waterfall right by the road. With the change in altitude I started getting cold.

I skipped the last few hundred meters of Poas because the weather was cold and wet and took the LONG fast downhill to Alajuela

Revisiting the next day with my friend Ariana.
