Antigua: Acatenango and Pacaya (back post)

Some pictures of my trip up these volcanoes with Jo. Pretty awesome on Acatenango whose summit overlooks an active volcano (Fuego) and has spectacular views of volcán de Agua, Antigua and the volcanoes that surround Lago Atitlán. We caught a taxi at around 3.30am via Parramos to the base in pueblito La Soledad under an hour away. It took around 3 hours to climb at a moderate pace. It was handy having the GPX routes from http://www.peakbagger.com/ since we had no guide and there are a few route options. We took one route up and another back down only seeing 2 groups in total; both had camped at the exposed and extremely windy cold summit and said the lava eruptions on Fuego at night were amazing. Volcán de Pacaya on the otherhand was immensely busy, further to get to, a quarter of the length of the hike and a lot less spectacular.  But much easier and worth doing if you’re not hiking any of the others (also a guide is included so it’s relatively cheap).

  1. Hey Nick, we might be cycling the back roads to Antigua, passing through La Soledad. Did you happen to notice if there was anyplace to stay, or any stores or anything where one might feel comfortable leaving their bikes?
